After the Funeral
What happens after a funeral
We’re here to support you through all the now what? moments
Supportive grief care for what comes next
Now that you’ve laid your loved one to rest, you might feel relief in knowing the service is over. But for many, this is when the reality of grief truly sets in.
It’s important to remember: you’re still not alone. The grief and stress of losing a loved one doesn't go away after the funeral – and neither do we.
After the funeral, you’ll receive a free book, called Now What? This grief support guide is designed for people living with the loss of someone close, written by highly-regarded Grief Counsellor, Lois Tonkin.
And whether it’s checking in with a kind word, helping you work through paperwork, or simply being someone to talk to, we’re always just a call away.
Complimentary bereavement support
We understand that grief doesn’t follow a set timeline. It takes time, and everyone’s journey looks different. That’s why we’re here to support you in the weeks and months that follow with free bereavement support. This service isn’t meant to take the place of friends or family – it simply adds another layer of care when you need it most.
Who is this support for?
Anyone from a family we’ve supported with funeral arrangements is welcome to use our bereavement service. We’ll usually check in a few weeks after the funeral to see how you’re doing, but you’re always welcome to reach out to us earlier if you need someone to talk to.
Funeral grants and financial support
If you’re on a low income or receiving a benefit, Work and Income New Zealand may be able to offer a funeral grant to help cover some of the expenses when someone close to you passes away.
If your loved one passed away from an accident – The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) may be able to contribute towards the cost of the funeral or memorial.
This support is available for both New Zealand citizens and overseas visitors. The funeral doesn’t need to take place in New Zealand, and the grant can also help with memorial costs to honour your loved one in the event where they’re missing and not found.
